Welcome Park is a fitting monument to William Penn, the man who discovered the state. The area isn't a park as much as it is a concrete plaza, with benches lining the outskirts and a large bronze statue of Penn in the center. Interestingly enough, the statue is a scale model of the one that sits atop the impressive City Hall building. Just to clear up confusion, the Welcome is the ship that brought Penn to America, which is where the name came from (the visitor's center is where you'll find tourist information.) The site's location was chosen because it occupies the house where Penn used to live and also where he granted the Charter of Privileges, an early document, in 1701.

In addition to the concrete and benches, there is a large oval-shaped inscription directly underneath Penn's statue, with the word 'Pennsylvania' in bold lettering and also bearing well-wishes. In the pavement you'll find a large map of the state that Penn settled, and the walls are covered in quotes, timelines, and other historical information concerning the young pioneer's life and times. This is more of a place to relax or pass through rather than plan a trip around, but its convenient location near other important buildings and museums makes it ideal for a stop on the way.
