The Atwater Kent Museum is a Greek Revival building which was designed by John Haviland in the late 1930s. Established by radio manufacturing pioneer A. Atwater Kent, the Museum pulls its attractions from a collection of over forty thousand pieces, ensuring a unique trip every time out.
Although originally the site of the Franklin Institute, the Atwater Kent Museum is now recognized as Philly's chief historical museum. Its exhibits mostly concern the Industrial Revolution and showcase many aspects of urban archaeology. Some assorted items of interest include models of the old street and railway patterns of the city, as well as maps and exhibits showing the Philadelphia's evolution into the metropolis of today. The children's wing, which is excellently maintained, holds old dolls, toys, carousels, and other items of that nature. Of particular interest is the "City Beneath Our Feet" gallery, featuring artifacts unearthed literally beneath the streets of Philadelphia. You honestly wouldn't believe some of the stuff they've found just lying around down there.
This museum is highly recommended for travelers seeking something off the beaten path, and especially those who fancy themselves to be history aficionados. While not as well known as the Franklin Institute or other "big" museums, the Atwater Kent Museum, with its huge pool of artifacts and clever presentation, earns it high marks in our list of must-visit sites.
